US President Joe Biden on Monday promised to stay in the presidential race, expressing confidence that ordinary voters still want him to be the Democratic Party’s candidate, Reuters reports.
“I’m not going anywhere,” Biden said in an interview on the American television channel MSNBC. He also urged anyone who wants him to withdraw from the race to “challenge him” and run against him when the Democratic National Convention meets in August.
Reuters notes that the appearance on MSNBC is another example of Joe Biden’s attempt to recover from the disastrous debate on June 27 against Republican Donald Trump, which raised questions about his mental capacity.
Biden expressed his frustration with what he called efforts by “elites” to force him out of the presidential race against Trump, whom he defeated in 2020. The election is scheduled for November 5.
When one of the MSNBC hosts listed a number of major media organizations and experts who have called for him to withdraw, Biden dismissed the question.
“I don’t care what these big names think,” he said. “The bottom line is I’m not going anywhere. I’m not going anywhere. I wouldn’t run if I didn’t completely believe that I’m the best candidate to beat Donald Trump in 2024,” Joe Biden added.
81-year-old President Joe Biden has repeatedly signaled in recent days that he has no intention of withdrawing and that he is the Democratic Party’s candidate in the presidential election.
