After a tense night of US-mediated talks, India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire. This was announced on Saturday, 10 May, by US President Donald Trump on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

“After a long night of negotiations brokered by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire. I congratulate both countries for showing good sense and great judgement,” the American leader wrote.

Trump’s statement has not yet been officially confirmed by the governments of India or Pakistan. At the same time, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the bilateral agreements were made possible after 48-hour talks between Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif.

“We commend the prime ministers for their wisdom and statesmanship. They have chosen peace,” Rubio added.

The agreement includes the launch of a dialogue on a wide range of issues on a neutral platform. This could be the most important breakthrough in relations between the two nuclear powers in the last decade.
