Indian and Pakistani troops have exchanged fire on the border in Kashmir for the second time in recent days following an attack near the tourist resort of Pahalgam that killed 26 people. The escalation took place amid the threat of a new escalation between the two nuclear powers. This was reported by The Guardian.

India claimed “unprovoked” shelling by Pakistan, to which it responded, with no casualties this time. The attack in Kashmir, according to New Delhi, was organised by the Kashmir Resistance group, which is associated with the Pakistani group Lashkar-e-Taiba, but Islamabad denies any involvement.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif proposed a “neutral investigation” but also warned of readiness to defend itself in the event of “any Indian adventure”.

In response to the terrorist attack, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, expelled Pakistani diplomats and closed the visa regime. Pakistan took mirror measures, announcing the suspension of the 1972 Shimla Agreement. Both sides warn that attempts to cut off the water could become an “act of war”.
