Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi meets with Omani Foreign Minister Saeed Badr Albusaidi in Muscat, Oman, 12 April 2025: Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Iran announced the positive results of indirect talks with the United States held in Oman. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai thanked Oman for mediation, noting that the conversation was held in a “constructive and promising atmosphere”. This was reported by The Jerusalem Post.
The talks were led by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and on the US side, by chief negotiator Steve Witkoff, who also leads dialogues on the Gaza ceasefire and negotiations with Russia and Azerbaijan.
However, Tehran demands a transition to real steps, not “empty phrases”. Representatives of the Iranian administration stressed that Iran is acceptable to a “precise, pragmatic and emotionless dialogue” with the United States that does not turn into a political show.
Iran’s nuclear ambitions
Iran seeks to preserve the main components of its nuclear programme, presenting it as civilian and scientific. At the same time, it continues to develop missile technologies that can have a dual purpose – for peaceful space or potential weapons.
Iran’s position on the negotiations is not yet fully aligned with the views of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps or the Supreme Leader, but the current administration is committed to cautious but consistent progress.
