The Revolutionary Court of Urmia, Iran, has handed down death sentences to four Iranians who were found guilty of collaborating with Israeli intelligence and participating in an assassination attempt on nuclear physicist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh. This was reported by the news portal TimeUkraineIsrael with reference to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

Fakhrizadeh murder case: key details

IRNA notes that three of the convicts were directly involved in the preparation of the assassination attempt on Fakhrizadeh, helping to deliver weapons to the crime scene under the direction of the Mossad. The Iranian authorities have not yet disclosed the personal data and details of the case against the accused. It is also not specified what specific charges were brought against the fourth of the convicts.

Elimination of a scientist: how it happened

Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the head of the Physical Research Centre (PHRC) and a senior officer in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, died in November 2020 after being seriously injured in an assassination attempt. Iranian investigators initially considered various versions of his death, including a terrorist attack and a car bomb attack.

Intelligence: new version of the murder

A year later, The New York Times, citing intelligence sources, revealed new details: the Israeli intelligence operation was carried out using a remotely controlled machine gun mounted on a car. According to the sources, the weapon was controlled via satellite, and the car itself exploded after the physicist was eliminated to destroy the high-tech equipment. Despite the explosion, some elements of the weapon remained intact, allowing Iranian experts to recreate some of the events.
