Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has travelled to Jordan as part of a diplomatic tour aimed at curbing the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. After Jordan, he will also visit Egypt and Turkey, EFE reports.
“Iranian Foreign Minister Araqchi will visit Jordan, Egypt and Turkey as part of our diplomatic approach to the countries of the region to stop genocide, atrocities and aggression,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghayi said in a post on Platform X.
Iran’s diplomatic activity is aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region, Baghayi stressed. At the same time, Iran is trying to normalise relations with Egypt, which has been Tehran’s goal in recent years.
On 18 October, the head of Iranian diplomacy will take part in a meeting of the foreign ministers of the 3+3 Platform in Istanbul. This platform brings together Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia on the one hand, and Russia, Turkey and Iran on the other, to cooperate in the South Caucasus.
Araqchi began his regional tour on 4 October, having already visited Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman and Iraq. This active diplomatic engagement comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and Israel.
The recent assassination of Lebanese Hezbollah militia leader Hassan Nasrallah and an Iranian general during Israeli air strikes on Beirut has increased tensions. In response to this, as well as to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in July, Iran struck Israel, launching about 189 ballistic missiles.
Israel vowed to respond to the attack, which provoked a harsh reaction from Iranian political and military leaders, who said they would retaliate with even greater force.
