Kamala Harris and Donald Trump

The Democratic candidate for the US presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris, released a medical report on Saturday declaring her healthy and fit to perform high-level duties. The move is aimed at creating a contrast with her Republican rival Donald Trump, Reuters reports.

Physical and mental resilience for the presidency

In a document distributed by the White House, Harris’ doctor, Joshua Simmons, said that her last medical examination in April revealed no serious problems. According to the doctor, the vice president leads an active lifestyle and follows a healthy diet, despite her busy schedule. Harris has only minor health problems, such as seasonal allergies and occasional hives, does not smoke and drinks alcohol in moderation.

“She has the necessary physical and mental stamina to successfully carry out the duties of the presidency, including leading the government, serving as head of state and commander-in-chief,” Simmons said.

Contact lenses, allergies and preventive examinations

The doctor also noted that Harris’s allergies are well controlled with over-the-counter medications. Her hives are rare and resolve quickly with antihistamines. For the past three years, she has been undergoing allergy immunotherapy, which has greatly relieved her symptoms.

Harris also wears contact lenses and has regular check-ups such as colonoscopies and mammograms. Her mother had a history of colon cancer in her family, so she is particularly attentive to her health.

Contrast with Trump and the Harris campaign

59-year-old Kamala Harris is running for president against 78-year-old Donald Trump. Her team is emphasising the difference in their ages and physical activity, hoping to attract undecided voters. Trump, the oldest entrant in the presidential race after Joe Biden decided not to run for a second term, also refuses to release medical reports, which reinforces the contrast between the candidates.

In 2018, the White House doctor said that Trump was generally in good condition but needed to lose weight and exercise regularly, which was also criticised by his opponents.
