According to the information provided by the advisor and press secretary to the President of Kazakhstan, Berik Uali, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev received proposals for Kazakhstan to join the BRICS. This was reported by Tengrinews.kz.
BRICS summit in Kazan
An important BRICS summit will take place on 23-24 October in Kazan. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has been invited to attend this forum, which is being chaired by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The President of Kazakhstan is scheduled to address an expanded meeting of the organisation in an outreach format on 24 October.
Kazakhstan’s position on BRICS
When asked about Kazakhstan’s possible accession to the BRICS, Berik Ouali noted that the country is closely following the evolution of this organisation. Kazakhstan supports the calls of the BRICS founders to create a just and democratic world order free from the hegemony of the great powers.
According to him, the President has received proposals for Kazakhstan’s membership in BRICS, which confirms the country’s authority in the international arena. However, for the time being, Kazakhstan plans to refrain from applying for membership in BRICS, given the multidimensional nature of the process of considering membership and other factors related to the development of this organisation.
Priorities of Kazakh diplomacy
When it comes to the priorities of Kazakh diplomacy, Berik Wali noted that the President has repeatedly emphasised the importance of the UN as a universal platform for discussing current international issues. Although there is a perception that the UN has lost its relevance, Tokayev believes that, despite its shortcomings, there are no other organisations capable of fulfilling this role.
He stressed that the UN Charter must remain the basis of international law and no one has the right to violate its principles. The President also expressed concern over the inability of the UN Security Council to make important decisions and called for reform of the body through broad consultations with Member States.
Background on BRICS
