Myanmar has experienced the strongest earthquake in a century. The 7.7-magnitude tremor that hit on Friday caused widespread destruction and was felt even in neighbouring Thailand, CNN reports.

According to the country’s military administration, as of Saturday evening, 1,644 people were killed and 3,408 others were injured. Rescuers continue to clear the rubble in search of survivors, as 139 people are still missing.

Satellite images show the catastrophic consequences of the disaster – dozens of destroyed buildings and devastated communities. International organisations are preparing humanitarian aid, while local residents are struggling to cope with the aftermath.
