Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who currently serves as deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, has harshly criticised European leaders, accusing them of pushing the war in Ukraine to a dangerous escalation after Donald Trump won the US presidential election. This was reported by the Russian news agency TASS.
In a statement on Telegram, Medvedev warned European politicians against further supplying Ukraine with long-range Western missiles that could be used to strike targets on Russian territory. In particular, he stressed that the possible provision of German Taurus missiles to Ukraine would not change the situation at the front, but would significantly increase the risk of escalation to the “most dangerous stage”.
Medvedev also criticised German chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz, who supports the idea of supplying missiles to Ukraine. According to Medvedev, Merz’s statements are likely to be pre-election and aimed at “supporting the agony of the Kyiv regime”.
“It is striking how much the current generation of European politicians ignores the lessons of World War II, seeking to bring the war to their territory, thereby fulfilling the wishes of the United States and ignoring the will of their own peoples,” Medvedev wrote, adding that “experienced European leaders have already been left in history, giving way to politicians with inflated self-esteem.”
Medvedev stressed that in his opinion, “the worst-case scenario now looks most likely” and that European leaders have plunged into an “autumn escalation”, especially after the new prospects in US foreign policy associated with Donald Trump.
