Moldovan President Maia Sandu has announced her victory in the second round of the presidential election over pro-Russian candidate Alexandru Stoianoglo. According to preliminary results, Sandu’s advantage has increased significantly due to the support of the Moldovan diaspora, despite the fact that Stoianoglo had an advantage in the country itself, Agerpres writes.
“Moldova has won!”: Maia Sandu’s speech
Addressing the nation, Sandu thanked all citizens, regardless of their choice, for participating in the elections, noting the mobilisation of young people and the overwhelming support from the diaspora:
“Dear Moldovans, today you have taught us a lesson in democracy. We have shown that, united, we can stand up to those who sought to humiliate us.”
Sandu noted the exceptional activism of the Moldovan diaspora and thanked the citizens who overcame all difficulties to express their position despite challenges ranging from intimidation to the use of “dirty money”.
“Our people have united and freedom and citizenship have won. You have shown that nothing can stop the power of people who have made their choice.”
The President promised to continue working for the good of the country to ensure peace, unity and a better life for all citizens, regardless of their political preferences.
