The presidential campaign in Poland has gained international attention: nationalist candidate Karol Navrotsky, backed by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, announced a “very important” meeting with former US President Donald Trump at the White House. The information caused a wave of outrage among politicians of the ruling coalition, who accused Trump of directly interfering in the Polish elections. This was reported by Reuters.

Nawrocki, who is in second place in polls ahead of the 18 May election, posted a photo with Trump on Facebook and said he spoke about “strategic partnership and future cooperation”. Trump, according to the Polish candidate, told him: “You’re going to win.”

Trump’s official account also posted a photo from the meeting in the Oval Office.

Warsaw was most concerned about Trump’s possible political support for a candidate who opposes granting preferences to Ukrainian refugees, although he does not deny helping Ukraine in its war with Russia. Nawrocki also called for strengthening Poland’s borders with Germany to combat illegal migration.

Polish authorities called the move an attempt to exert external influence on democratic elections. MP Roman Gertrych directly accused Trump of “brazen interference” and called him “Putin’s friend”.
