Nicușor Dan, who has just been elected to the post of head of state, said he does not support the idea of sending Romanian troops to Ukraine as part of a possible peacekeeping mission. He said this in an interview with Politico

“To be part of the armies that guarantee peace in Ukraine – no. I think it would not be very appropriate because of the tensions that already exist between Romania and Russia,” Dan said.

He stressed that Romania is ready to provide extensive operational support to its allies on its territory, but that participation in direct military operations in Ukraine is inappropriate. Dan recalled the difficult relations with Russia and the risks that such involvement would entail.

Peace should be negotiated with Ukraine, not dictated by Putin”

Dang also criticised US President Donald Trump’s approach to negotiations with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. He noted that Moscow’s demands are unrealistic and do not lead to real peace.

“Everything that concerns Ukraine should be decided and agreed upon by Ukrainians themselves,” he stressed.

Romania will remain an ally of Ukraine

Nicușor Dan expressed cautious optimism about the possibility of peace in the near future. At the same time, he stressed that Romania will continue to be a partner of Ukraine and the EU in supporting Kyiv to win on acceptable terms.

“I am glad that Europeans have decided together to continue to support Ukraine until Ukrainians get peace on the most acceptable terms for themselves,” he said.

The President also reaffirmed his intention to maintain a strategic partnership with the United States and support pan-European efforts to strengthen defence and security on the continent.
