In the US state of North Carolina, master carpenter Jerry Hicks from Banner Elk became a millionaire thanks to an unexpected stroke of luck. He accidentally found a $20 bill in a store car park and decided to spend it on an Extreme Cash lottery ticket. Hicks did not plan to buy this particular ticket, but his choice turned out to be extremely successful: the lottery ticket brought him a win of one million dollars, CNN reports.
“They didn’t actually have the ticket I was looking for, so I bought this one,” Hicks said, as quoted in a statement released by the North Carolina Lottery.
He went to the Education Lottery headquarters on Friday, where he chose a lump sum payment of $600,000 instead of annual payments of $50,000 over the next 20 years. After paying taxes, the lucky carpenter was left with $429,007.
Jerry Hicks plans to use the money to support his children and retire after 56 years as a carpenter. “This money will give me the opportunity to help my children and finally retire in peace,” the lucky winner shared his plans.
