North Korea on Thursday morning launched at least several short-range ballistic missiles from the area of Wonsan on the east coast of the country. This was reported by the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea, Yonhap reports.

According to preliminary data, the missiles flew up to 800 km and fell into the Sea of Japan. Seoul and Tokyo said they were working with the United States to analyse the trajectories and type of weapons. The Japanese government recorded an “irregular trajectory” of one of the missiles.

The purpose of the launch is to demonstrate export potential

South Korean armed forces spokesman Lee Sung-jung noted that the launches could have been a test of “export” munitions. Pyongyang is actively selling missiles to other countries, despite UN bans.

US intelligence reports that the DPRK has already handed over missiles to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine. In addition, North Korean troops have been spotted in the Russian region of Kursk, where they are taking part in hostilities.

Pyongyang’s missile programme under UN ban

The DPRK’s missile programme is a violation of UN Security Council resolutions. Despite this, the Kim regime continues to actively develop nuclear and missile technologies.

In March, the DPRK already launched several missiles, accusing the United States and South Korea of “provocative exercises”.
