Norway to train Ukrainian F-16 pilots in Portugal

Starting next year, Norway will begin training Ukrainian pilots and ground specialists on F-16 fighter jets in Portugal. This was announced by the Norwegian Ministry of Defence on Friday, 13 December.

Transferring your studies to Portugal

In 2025, Denmark, which previously trained Ukrainian pilots, will end its programmes due to the transition to more modern F-35 fighters. In this regard, the training will be transferred to Portugal, where Norwegian specialists will act as instructors.

Norway has already allocated the necessary funds for the implementation of this programme.

The strategic importance of supporting Ukraine

Norwegian Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram stressed the importance of helping Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.

“The struggle waged by the Ukrainians is existential and important for the security of Norway and Europe. We must continue to support Ukraine and look for new ways to strengthen their defence,” Gram said.
