Today, 15 November, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had an important telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to German government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit, the main topic of the conversation was the war in Ukraine, which the chancellor strongly condemned, calling it unprovoked aggression by Russia. According to the TimeUkraineIsrael portal, citing the German government’s press service, Scholz stressed the importance of ending hostilities and returning to peace talks.
A call for an end to aggression
Scholz called on President Putin to immediately cease hostilities and withdraw Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine. He stressed that a peaceful resolution of the conflict is only possible if Russia stops its aggression and is ready for constructive negotiations. The Chancellor also noted that Germany remains unwavering in its support for Ukraine and is ready to help it fight Russian aggression for as long as it takes.
Support for Ukraine and peace talks
In his address, Scholz stressed the importance of establishing a just and sustainable peace. He noted that to achieve this peace process, Russia must demonstrate a real willingness to negotiate and respect international law and Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Cooperation with Ukraine
Before this conversation, the German Chancellor had already discussed the situation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. After the phone conversation with Putin, Scholz plans to continue consultations with Kyiv to coordinate further actions in the diplomatic process.
Germany’s position
Germany’s position will remain unchanged: the country will continue to provide comprehensive support to Ukraine, strongly opposing Russian aggression and calling for a peaceful settlement based on the principles of international law.
