Clashes between India and Pakistan escalated sharply on Friday night. The Indian army reported numerous attacks by Pakistan along the western border, including the use of drones and ceasefire violations in Kashmir. In response, according to New Delhi, an adequate strike was made. This was reported by Reuters.

Indian forces also reported a foiled attempt at a major infiltration in the Samba region, while heavy shelling was reported in the Uri district. There were reports of civilian casualties, with one woman killed and another injured. Sirens were sounded in the border town of Amritsar, and residents were asked to stay indoors.

Pakistan, for its part, denies the attacks and calls India’s accusations “baseless” and “politically motivated”.

The escalation began after India struck “terrorist camps” in Pakistan in response to a terrorist attack in Kashmir. Both countries began exchanging strikes and used drones and missiles in response.

The US, China and Russia called on the parties to immediately reduce tensions. US Vice President J.D. Vance said: “We want to see de-escalation as soon as possible, but we can’t control these countries.”

The conflict threatens to further destabilise Pakistan, whose economy is still recovering from the financial crisis of 2023.
