Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban expressed doubts about the role of the European Union in the future world order and said that the EU would not play a key role in a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
“No one will fight for a community that does not have a clear position. The future no longer belongs to Europe – it is in the Arab world, China and Central Asia,” Orban said in an interview with Mandiner published on Sunday.
According to the Hungarian leader, Budapest should adapt to global changes and not limit itself to the European Union.
“Hungary has to join this new world order, we cannot remain exclusively within the EU. We are open, we are ready, we are here,” he stressed.
Criticism of Europe and the decline of its role in the world
Orban also reminded that Europe was once the world’s largest economy, but now it has lost ground to the US and China.
His statement came as the US and Russia are preparing for the first informal talks on ending the war in Ukraine in Saudi Arabia. European leaders are not invited to this meeting.
At the same time, a summit on the situation in Ukraine will be held in Paris on Monday, with some European leaders in attendance.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio assured that Ukraine and Europe would definitely be part of the peace process when the negotiations take shape.
