During an operation to protect critical infrastructure, Polish border guards found more than 100 kg of cocaine at the bottom of the Baltic Sea near the Gulf of Gdansk. The value of the seized drugs on the black market could have reached 60 million zlotys ($15 million), Reuters reports.

Law enforcement officers detained seven people involved in the smuggling. Searches of their homes confirmed the presence of large quantities of drugs. If found guilty, the suspects face up to 20 years in prison.

The Baltic Sea region is on high alert due to threats to critical underwater infrastructure. Following a series of suspicious incidents involving damage to cables and pipelines, NATO has announced a strengthened presence in the region.
