On Monday, Pope Francis strongly criticised the culture of machismo, saying that such an ideology treats women as “second-class citizens”. He stressed that women are the ones who move the world forward.

“We are used to this macho culture, where women are not pets, but they are not perceived as equals. However, it is women who are leading the world forward,” Pope Francis said during an audience with representatives of the Spanish organisation Manos Unidas, EFE reports.

He also stressed the special role of women in supporting families, helping those in need and demonstrating deep empathy. “Women lead the family forward and approach those in need with a rich feminine sensitivity,” the pontiff added.

Praise for Ursula von der Leyen

Pope Francis shared his impressions of his conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, a mother of seven and a doctor. He praised her ability to solve complex issues. “I asked her how she does it, and she said, ‘Like mothers’.”

The pontiff called this approach an example of “feminine genius, compassion and perseverance”, which are inherent traits of women.

Combating discrimination against women

Pope Francis has consistently advocated strengthening the role of women in society and in the Catholic Church. His words once again emphasise the need to overcome stereotypes and open up new opportunities for women in various spheres of life.

This position of the Pope demonstrates the Catholic Church’s commitment to greater equality and inclusiveness, which is one of the key aspects of his pontificate.
