Pope Francis’ health deteriorates – Vatican

Pope Francis’ health condition has deteriorated sharply over the past 24 hours, the Vatican said on Saturday. The pontiff suffered a prolonged asthmatic attack, which was complicated by anaemia and plaquelopenia, forcing doctors to resort to blood transfusions. This was reported by Reuters.

“The Holy Father’s condition remains critical and, as we reported yesterday, he is still not out of danger,” the Vatican said in a statement quoted by La Repubblica.

The Pope remains in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he was admitted on 14 February due to breathing difficulties. Later, doctors diagnosed him with double pneumonia, which is particularly dangerous due to his age and general health.

“This morning, the Pope suffered a severe asthma attack that required high-flow oxygen therapy. Blood tests revealed anaemia and a low platelet count, which led to an urgent blood transfusion,” the Vatican said.

The situation remains difficult
Pope Francis is aware of the situation, but is in pain and weakness. The doctors’ prognosis is currently cautious, as there is a risk that the lung infection will spread to the bloodstream and cause sepsis, a condition that will be difficult to overcome.

What is known about the Pope’s previous health problems?
▪️ When he was young, Francis suffered from pleurisy, which required doctors to remove part of his lung.
▪️ Over the past two years, he has been treated several times for respiratory tract infections.
▪️ Due to chronic health problems, the Pope often uses a wheelchair.

Given the severity of his condition, the Vatican has announced that Pope Francis will not attend Sunday prayer with the faithful in St Peter’s Square. This is the second week in a row that he has been forced to miss the traditional meeting.
