On Friday morning, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 occurred in the Drake Passage between Cape Horn and Antarctica, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The epicentre was located at a depth of 10 km, 219 km from the Argentine city of Ushuaia.
Argentina and Chile have issued a tsunami alert. Chilean emergency services have already started evacuating residents of the coastal regions of the southern province of Magallanes.
According to the rescue services, the tremors were felt in the extreme southern regions of both countries. There have been no reports of damage or casualties, but local authorities are urging people to stay in safe areas and follow official reports.
