Prince Harry said he was in a “state of shock” after stepping down as patron of Sentebale, a charity he founded to support young people affected by HIV in Lesotho and Botswana. Along with him, co-founder Prince Siiso is also leaving the organisation, CNN reports .
Management conflict leads to resignation
The Sentebale Foundation, founded in 2006 in honour of Princess Diana, was at the centre of a scandal due to a conflict between the organisation’s board and its president, Sophie Chandauka. After the board of directors attempted to remove Chandauka, she filed a lawsuit in an attempt to keep her position.
In a joint statement released by Sky News, Prince Harry and Prince Siiso called the situation “impossible”, which led them to decide to leave:
“The gap between the board and the president of the foundation has become irreversible, which has created a crisis situation,” the statement said.
Harry remains loyal to Africa
Despite leaving Sentebale, Prince Harry stressed that he would continue to support initiatives in Africa. He has visited the continent several times, and last year he visited Nigeria.
Prince Harry, who currently lives in California with his wife Meghan Markle and two children, relinquished his royal duties in 2020.
“Although we are no longer patrons of Sentebale, we will remain its founders and will always remember what this organisation can do if it is run properly,” the Prince said.
What’s next for Sentebale?
The foundation’s board insists that it acted in the best interests of the organisation when making its personnel decisions. However, the future of the foundation remains uncertain, especially after the resignation of Prince Harry and its main patrons.
