Hundreds of people gathered in central London on Saturday in solidarity with Ukraine, which has been fighting Russian aggression for almost three years. The protesters first gathered at the monument to St Volodymyr and then marched to the Russian Embassy.

The demonstrators held placards with the following inscriptions: “Ukraine defends peace in the whole of Europe”, “I support Ukraine”, and dozens of blue and yellow flags were waving. The participants included both Ukrainians and British citizens.

“I’m not a Ukrainian, but I understand the huge threat they face,” said Martin Vincent, a 68-year-old British pensioner. “We cannot abandon them, Britain has a duty to support Ukraine,” he added.

Stella Robinson, 27, expressed concern for the future of Ukraine and Europe. “We can’t turn a blind eye to war just because Trump wants peace,” she said, alluding to the US and Russia’s diplomatic initiative to end the war.

European countries are concerned that the administration of US President Donald Trump may strike a deal with the Kremlin without security guarantees for Kyiv. Tensions between the leaders of Ukraine and the United States increased after Trump called Volodymyr Zelenskyy a “dictator without elections”.

On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron will arrive in Washington for talks with Trump. On Thursday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will travel to the US.

Ukraine is expected to be a key topic in these talks.
