This morning, due to large-scale protests by climate activists, two German airports were forced to temporarily suspend flights. A group of activists from the organization Last Generation organized simultaneous actions on the runways of four airports in the country, causing significant disruptions in air transportation, Reuters reported.

According to reports, the protests covered the airports of Berlin, Cologne-Bonn, Nuremberg and Stuttgart. Activists literally attached themselves to the runways, trying to stop the movement of planes. On its website, Nuremberg Airport announced the suspension of flights until further notice, warning passengers of delays. Cologne-Bonn also temporarily suspended flights as police tried to clear the protesters.

In Berlin, the police quickly intervened, removing two activists from the runway, but the flight schedule was not significantly affected. The situation in Stuttgart, on the other hand, remains uncertain, as the airport has yet to comment.

The wave of protests is part of a wider campaign to draw attention to climate change and demand that the German government completely phase out the use of oil, gas and coal by 2030. Last Generation said similar promotions are planned in several other countries in Europe and North America.

The reaction of German politicians was immediate: they called for increased security at airports, especially after climate activists managed to disrupt the operation of Germany’s busiest airport – Frankfurt twice – last month.

This situation is causing increasing concern among passengers, as climate actions aimed at drawing attention to environmental problems lead to real disruptions in the country’s vital infrastructures.
