Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump have exchanged congratulations on the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. Putin’s international affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov said this on Friday on Russia’s Channel One TV, Reuters reports.

“Through their advisers, Presidents Putin and Trump exchanged greetings on the occasion of our common holiday,” Ushakov said. According to him, these were “warm words and mutual congratulations”.

Russia celebrated the 80th anniversary of the victory with a traditional military parade in Moscow, attended by dozens of foreign leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping. However, US Ambassador to Russia Lynn Tracy did not attend the parade, TASS news agency reported.

This exchange of greetings took place against the backdrop of tense relations between Moscow and Washington, but may indicate Trump’s desire to maintain personal channels of communication with the Kremlin, especially in the run-up to the US elections.
