Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the telephone conversation between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump signalled that the United States and Russia were ready to move on to discuss peace rather than war. This was reported by Reuters.
“This is a strong signal that we will now try to solve problems through dialogue,” Peskov said in an interview with state television.
The statement came after Trump shocked European leaders on Wednesday by announcing that he had spoken directly to Putin and ordered him to start “immediate” talks on Ukraine. This caused concern in the EU that European countries might be excluded from the negotiations.
European summit in Paris
Amid this situation, French President Emmanuel Macron initiated an emergency summit, which may take place on Monday in Paris. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski confirmed that European leaders are discussing a unified strategy for responding to the US-Russia talks.
“We have to demonstrate our strength and unity,” Sikorsky wrote on social media platform X, and confirmed that Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk would attend the Paris meeting.
The Elysee Palace told AFP that “informal consultations” are ongoing between European leaders on the possibility of such a summit, but the date and list of participants have not yet been determined.
