Putin meets with a senior DPRK official: Moscow and Pyongyang strengthen strategic partnership

Moscow and Pyongyang continue to expand their cooperation. At the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin held talks with a senior North Korean official, Ri Hee-yong, a member of the Politburo and secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea. This was reported by the state-run KCNA news agency, Reuters reports.

During the meeting, Putin expressed his gratitude to the DPRK for Russia’s support in international issues and confirmed that relations between the two countries continue to strengthen. In particular, this refers to the implementation of the strategic agreement signed by the leaders of the two countries in June 2024.

According to US, South Korean and Ukrainian military analysts, North Korea has already sent thousands of troops to support Russian forces in Ukraine. However, the Kremlin does not officially recognise this cooperation.

The document, which came into force in December, provides, among other things, for a mutual defence agreement, which could mean military assistance from Russia in the event of armed aggression against the DPRK and vice versa.

This meeting further exacerbates the situation in the international arena, as cooperation between Russia and North Korea poses risks to global security. The question arises: how far is the Kremlin willing to go in this game?
