CAIRO. On Sunday, another railway accident took place in southern Egypt, killing at least one person and injuring more than 20 others. This was reported by abcnews. According to local authorities, the locomotive collided with the tail of a passenger train heading to Cairo.

The accident occurred in Minya province, about 270 kilometres south of the Egyptian capital. As a result of the collision, two wagons derailed and fell into a nearby river. The causes of the incident are currently under investigation, but accidents on the railway tracks in Egypt are not uncommon due to the outdated infrastructure.

The released footage shows two train cars partially submerged in water. According to the Ministry of Health, 21 people were taken to hospitals. Later, 19 people were discharged after receiving medical care.

This is the second railway accident in the country in the last month. In September, two passenger trains collided in a city on the Nile Delta, killing three people.

The Egyptian authorities have initiated reforms of the railway system in recent years. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said that about 250 billion Egyptian pounds (about $8.13 billion) is needed to modernise the abandoned railways.
