The US administration remains unpredictable, and Romania is making efforts to restore Washington’s trust after the cancellation of the presidential election and the ban on pro-Russian candidate Kellin Georgescu, Bloomberg writes, citing sources and official White House responses.

In February, US Vice President J.D. Vance sharply criticised Bucharest for cancelling the vote, calling the grounds for the decision “weak”. After that, according to journalists, Washington put pressure on the Romanian authorities to allow Georgescu to run. Despite this, due to the candidate’s ties to Russia, he was again banned from running in the postponed elections in May.

Official Bucharest has allegedly opened new channels of communication with the Trump administration, which allies consider closed and unpredictable. At the same time, neither Trump nor Vance has commented publicly on the situation for several weeks.

US National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes said: “We are deeply disturbed by what happened in Romania, and we are working to ensure that such events do not happen again.”
