US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a phone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in which he called on Moscow to engage in a good-faith dialogue with Ukraine. This was stated by State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce, Ukrinform reports.
Rubio welcomed the 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange, calling it “an example of how to reduce suffering”.
The US calls for dialogue as “the only way to end the war”, the Secretary of State said, referring to President Donald Trump’s position.
“The Secretary of State echoed President Trump’s calls for a constructive, good faith dialogue with Ukraine,” Bruce said.
At the same time, Lavrov himself had earlier declared that he would not hold talks in the Vatican, and Moscow proposed a second round in Istanbul on 2 June. The Ukrainian side has already conveyed its position on the ceasefire to the Russians, and Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga urged Russia not to delay the “memorandum” in response.
