Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) says that the United States and the United Kingdom are trying to undermine stability in Syria after the change of power in the country. According to the Russian newspaper Kommersant, Western intelligence services, according to the SVR, are planning to organise attacks on Russian military bases in the region with the participation of militants from the Islamic State terrorist organisation (ISIS).
Conspiracy charges
In its statement, the SVR claims that representatives of the British intelligence service MI6 and the US CIA have allegedly trained ISIS commanders to carry out these attacks. The terrorists have received attack drones to carry out the attacks.
“Washington and London seek to maintain chaos in the Middle East to ensure their long-term dominance in the region,” the SVR said.
According to the Russian side, the provocations are intended to force Russia to evacuate its military forces from Syria.
Russian presence as a factor of stability
The SVR emphasises that the Russian military presence on Syria’s Mediterranean coast remains “a significant factor in regional stability” and hinders the implementation of US and UK plans.
The political crisis in Syria
The situation in Syria deteriorated sharply after the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham seized power in the country on 8 December. President Bashar al-Assad resigned and fled to Russia, leaving the country in a deep political crisis.
These developments have become a new challenge for the international community, which continues to monitor the situation in the Middle East. At the same time, Russia’s statements raise questions and increase tensions between Moscow and the West.
