Russia has announced the start of mass production of KUB-M mobile radiation shelters, which can provide protection against nuclear radiation, shock waves, debris and fire. This was announced by the Russian Research Institute of the Ministry of Defence, Reuters reports.

Features of shelters

The KUB-M shelter looks like a reinforced armoured shipping container and consists of two main modules:

  • A residential block with 54 beds.
  • A technical unit with life support equipment.

If necessary, the modules can be combined to create larger protective structures. The main advantages are mobility – the shelter can be easily transported by road or rail – and the ability to quickly deploy and connect to utility networks.

“These shelters have a number of advantages over capital structures, especially in conditions of limited space or the need for urgent deployment,” the Russian institute noted.

Purpose and capabilities

The developers say that the KUB-M is suitable for protection in both man-made and natural disasters, including in the northern permafrost. It is designed to accommodate civilians, critical infrastructure personnel or military units.

The announcement of the production launch follows the update of Russia’s nuclear doctrine, which President Vladimir Putin signed this week. The doctrine allows for the use of nuclear weapons in response to conventional missile attacks supported by nuclear powers.

The news also coincides with information that the United States has allowed Ukraine to use long-range missiles to strike Russian territory.

Although Russian officials have not linked these events, experts suggest that the decision to launch mass production of such shelters may be a response to increased global tensions.

The deployment of the KUB-M may become part of Russia’s civil defence strategy in the face of an aggravating geopolitical situation.
