Anna Prokofyeva, a journalist for Russia’s state-run Channel One TV channel, was killed and her cameraman Dmitry Volkov was seriously injured in a mine explosion in the Belgorod region, near the border with Ukraine. Reuters reported this on Wednesday, citing a statement from the TV channel.
According to official reports, the film crew came across a mine allegedly planted by the Ukrainian military. Prokofyeva, who was 35 years old, died on the spot, and her colleague was hospitalised in critical condition.
The Belgorod region remains one of the hottest regions of Russia, where recent months have seen an increase in drone attacks and artillery shelling from Ukraine. At the same time, the Kremlin has repeatedly claimed that there are battles in the border areas and attempts to break through by the Ukrainian military.
This is not the first death of journalists in the war zone. Earlier this week, two Russian correspondents and their driver were killed in shelling in the Luhansk region. In total, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), nearly 20 journalists have been killed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
