Russian security and military officials are calling on Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to abandon the idea of negotiations to end the war and instead intensify military operations in Ukraine. This information was published by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in its latest report.
Why the security forces are in favour of escalation
Despite the huge losses on the battlefield, Russian security forces consider it necessary to increase the intensity of hostilities.
According to the ISW, the average daily advance of Russian troops in December 2024 slowed to 9 square kilometres, which is significantly less than in September-November, when Russia suffered significant losses.
Analysts note that the Russian military command may be less inclined than Putin to tolerate such losses if the situation on the front continues to deteriorate.
Plan of further actions
The security forces propose several steps to intensify the offensive:
- Conducting partial conscriptions to fill gaps in manpower.
- Attracting additional equipment and resources to support the war effort.
- Continued pressure on Ukraine to gain at least tactical advantages on the battlefield.
Despite the slowdown in the offensive, Moscow continues to rely on escalation. ISW analysts emphasise that the Russian security services are not ready to admit huge losses and end the war, refusing any compromises or negotiations.
