The Russian economy is facing new challenges as the level of wage arrears is growing rapidly, and businesses are unable to meet their financial obligations. According to official data from the Russian Federal Labour and Employment Service, the number of appeals for non-payment of wages has increased by more than a third over the year, the National Security and Defence Council’s Countering Disinformation Centre reported in Telegram .

The main reason for this phenomenon is a significant rise in the cost of credit, which forces companies to choose between paying off debts and paying employees. Employees in the construction, manufacturing, mining and agricultural sectors were hit hardest. The situation is particularly critical for state-owned corporations, which continue to accumulate debts amid economic instability.

To conceal the real problems, Russian propaganda promotes narratives of “stable economic growth” and “insignificant impact of sanctions”. However, the ongoing enormous costs of the war are only deepening the crisis, and salary delays are affecting the welfare of ordinary Russians.

The financial situation in the country continues to deteriorate, and the risk of a social explosion is becoming more and more real.
