Scholz: Germany will continue to support Ukraine, but will not expand the war

In his New Year’s address, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed the importance of supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia. According to a statement released on Tuesday, 31 December, Scholz assured that Germany will remain on Ukraine’s side, while preventing the conflict from escalating.

“Germany will not leave Ukraine in trouble”
Scholz noted that despite the growing concern among citizens over Russia’s aggressive war, Germany will continue to support Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“We will not leave Ukraine in trouble and we will support it like no other country in Europe,” said the German Chancellor.

“Keeping a cool head”
At the same time, Scholz stressed that the German government is seeking to keep a “cool head” to avoid the war expanding beyond the territory of Ukraine. This means that the country is ready to provide assistance, but cautiously, so as not to give rise to further escalation of the conflict.

The Chancellor also emphasised the need to balance support for Ukraine with maintaining stability in Europe, which is going through a difficult period due to Russian aggression.
