Shoigu in North Korea: Russia and DPRK discuss implementation of strategic partnership agreement
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu has arrived in Pyongyang to hold talks with DPRK leader Kim Jong-un, Russian state media report, citing AFP.
The meeting is devoted to the implementation of the provisions of the “global strategic partnership agreement” between the two countries. The focus is on military cooperation and historical memory, including the commemoration of Korean soldiers who, according to Russians, took part in the battles for the Kursk region.
The visit takes place against the backdrop of a deepening military alliance between Pyongyang and Moscow, which intensified after the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. The DPRK has been supplying Russia with ammunition and, according to some reports, sending troops to help in the fighting in Kursk, although this information has not been officially confirmed by the international community.
Earlier, Moscow and Pyongyang signed a mutual defence agreement during Vladimir Putin’s visit to North Korea in 2024. This may indicate the formation of a new military bloc in which Russia is looking for allies rejected by the West.
