Tiberville, a town of 1,773 people located in Normandy, northern France, has received an inheritance that exceeds the annual budget of the community by five times. The generosity was shown by a man who had never visited the place, The Guardian reports.

Roger Tiberwill, a former meteorologist and descendant of a family of winemakers, left most of his estate, estimated at €10 million, to the town that bears his name. He lived a modest life in Paris, where he owned four apartments in the city’s southeastern district.

The mayor of Tiberville, Guy Paris, called the legacy “exceptional” and stressed that the funds would be used “carefully and responsibly”. Although it has not yet been decided how the money will be spent, the mayor stressed that the amount exceeds all expectations.

Roger Tiberville, who died in August at the age of 91, left no heirs. His only condition was that his ashes be buried in a memorial in the town’s cemetery.

“Mr Tiberville did not ask for anything in return, but we, as a community, should at least fulfil his last wish,” the mayor said.

The residents of Tiberville, surprised by this generous act, discuss how the legacy can change the future of their community.
