The son of Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit, 27-year-old Marius Borg Gabriel, has been arrested on suspicion of rape. This was officially reported by the Norwegian police. The incident that led to the arrest occurred in August in a woman’s apartment in Oslo. This was reported by The Guardian.
Circumstances of the case
According to an official police statement, Gaby is suspected of violating the criminal code, which deals with sexual acts with a person who was unconscious or otherwise unable to resist. The statement also clarified that the sexual act in question was a non-consensual one.
The incident took place at night, when Gaby, according to investigators, was in the apartment of a woman with whom he had a relationship. Police are also investigating possible domestic violence. Norwegian media reported that during the search, law enforcement officers found a knife that had been stuck in the wall of the victim’s bedroom.
Violation of a restraining order
This is not Gaby’s first arrest in recent months. In September, he was detained on suspicion of violating a court order to approach the victim. At the time of his latest arrest on Monday, he was in a car with the same woman who was the victim in the August incident.
Public reaction
Marius Borg Gabriel is the son of Mette-Marit from her previous relationship before her marriage to Crown Prince Haakon. Although he has no title and does not belong to the royal line of succession, the news has caused a great deal of reverberation in Norway and beyond.
The police have not yet decided whether to keep Gaby in custody. In the meantime, the investigation is ongoing and he is facing a number of court proceedings.
The case tarnished the reputation of the royal family and drew attention to issues of violence and accountability in privileged circles.
