Starlink expands its presence in Africa: Musk enters new markets

Starlink internet is now available in more than 12 African countries. Elon Musk’s company is actively expanding its operations on the continent, having just received licences in Somalia and Lesotho. This week, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni announced a “productive meeting” with Starlink representatives, emphasising their commitment to providing affordable internet in hard-to-reach regions. This was reported by Reuters.

“Appreciate their intention to reduce the cost of internet and establish a presence in Uganda. They are welcome here,” Museveni wrote on the X platform (Twitter).

Uganda, like many other African countries, suffers from a monopolised internet market, high prices and unreliable coverage. Starlink’s entry could change the situation by creating competition for national operators and accelerating the continent’s digitalisation.
