A terrorist attack in the US city of New Orleans (Louisiana) killed 15 people and injured 30 others, CNN reports.
Suspect and motives
The suspect in the attack is 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a US Army veteran from Texas. Before the attack, he released several videos in which he declared his affiliation with the ISIS terrorist group.
Jabbar served in the United States Armed Forces from 2007 to 2020, including a tour of duty in Afghanistan from February 2009 to January 2010.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico confirmed that at least two Mexican citizens are among the victims. Diplomats are currently providing them with assistance and liaising with local authorities.
US law enforcement is investigating the incident as a terrorist act. In his statement, US President Joe Biden expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and stressed the need to strengthen security measures to prevent such tragedies.
The terrorist attack was one of the largest attacks in the United States in recent years, and raises concerns about the activities of extremist groups in the country.
