The Kremlin reacted cautiously to the results of the first round of the presidential election in Romania, where Kalin Georgescu, a candidate described by a number of media outlets, including RIA Novosti, as a “Russia-oriented candidate,” took the lead.
According to a statement released by the press service of the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s administration, the Kremlin noted that it had no clear assessment of Georgescu’s “worldview”, stressing the uncertainty about his political views. Kremlin sources stressed that at this stage they could not draw unequivocal conclusions about Georgescu’s position on international politics, in particular on relations with Russia.
This caution on the part of the Kremlin may indicate the Kremlin’s expectations for the next stages of the elections and potential changes in the political situation in Romania, which is an important strategic partner in the region and part of NATO.
