The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has exposed an attempt to disguise the Kremlin’s true intentions in the international arena. According to a new analytical report, the visit of the special representative of the Russian leader, Kirill Dmitriev, to the United States and his public statements completely contradict Moscow’s true position on the war in Ukraine.
What happened?
On 3 April, Dmitriev appeared on the American TV channels Fox News and Newsmax, where he said:
- He presented Russia as a potentially profitable partner for US investment;
- He assured of a “strong” Russian economy despite the sanctions;
- He proposed cooperation with the US in the areas of the Arctic, rare earth resources and LNG;
- He even said that Moscow does not demand the lifting of sanctions to end the war.
What does ISW say?
Analysts directly call Dmitriev’s speech an attempt at disinformation.
“The Kremlin is openly demanding that the United States ease sanctions as a precondition for a ceasefire in the Black Sea,” ISW said.
Dmitriev is also allegedly trying to push an “economic” agenda, hiding the fact that the Kremlin
- Rejects any security guarantees for Ukraine;
- I am not ready for a general truce;
- It continues to put forward maximalist conditions in the negotiations, including Ukraine’s “demilitarisation” and refusal to join NATO.
ISW reminds that earlier it was Dmitriev who tried to derail the energy deal between Ukraine and the United States, offering Americans cooperation with Russia instead. Now he is trying to use the illusory promise of financial benefits to mask the Kremlin’s unchanging aggressive policy.
