The number of cases of document forgery and insurance fraud involving artificial intelligence is growing rapidly in the Netherlands.
According to NOS, criminals use AI-based programs to create fake medical certificates, bills, and receipts to illegally receive insurance payments – sometimes for tens of thousands of euros.
“Fraudsters are forging documents to submit fake claims worth thousands of euros to insurers using artificial intelligence software,” the publication notes.
According to experts at CED Forensic, a company that helps insurance companies investigate such cases, AI has made fraud accessible even to people without special technical knowledge. Previously, criminals had to master complex software or Photoshop to forge documents, but now it is enough to upload a file to an AI system and give a simple command.
“Fraud with fake documents has always existed, but thanks to artificial intelligence, it has become very easy,” says Manfred Mulder of CED Forensic.
In one case, the fraudster submitted false documents to seven insurance companies at once, pretending that his expensive trip had been cancelled for medical reasons. The total amount of claims submitted reached €188,000, of which €150,000 was actually paid.
The Dutch Union of Insurers warns that insurance fraud is a criminal offence. Violators face deprivation of insurance, blacklisting and criminal prosecution.
Although the exact scale of the problem is still being assessed, experts say the number of such cases is constantly growing. Insurance companies are already investing in new technologies to detect AI fakes and tighten controls.
