The United States is ready to actively combat Russia’s possible attempts to interfere in the presidential election in the Republic of Moldova and the referendum on the country’s accession to the European Union to be held on Sunday. This was stated by White House spokesman John Kirby on Tuesday, AFP reports.
“Russia is actively trying to sabotage Moldova’s elections and its European integration,” Kirby said during the briefing. According to him, Moscow has spent millions of dollars in recent months to influence the election results.
Kirby also emphasised the role of Russian oligarch Ilan Shor, who spends tens of millions of dollars every month through NGOs that spread pro-Russian rhetoric. Ilan Shor, who is being prosecuted for corruption in the “theft of the century” case, has been in Israel for several years, refusing extradition.
“The United States will continue to support Moldova and its people, and to expose and counter Russia’s attempts to undermine democracy,” Kirby said.
The current President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, who is confidently leading the country towards Europe, remains a favourite for the next term.
