Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has sharply criticised the actions of the United States after the Ukrainian military launched long-range ATACMS missiles against Russia. On board a plane returning from the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Erdogan told reporters that Washington’s decision to give Ukraine these weapons was a “big mistake” that would only exacerbate the conflict, AFP reports.
“This decision of the Biden administration will not only escalate the conflict, but may also lead to a tougher reaction from Russia,” the Turkish head of state stressed, commenting on the events unfolding on the 1000th day of the war.
Erdogan warned that further escalation of hostilities, especially with the use of modern weapons, could “bring the region and the world to the brink of a new large-scale war”. The Turkish leader called on both Moscow and Kyiv to refrain from actions that could turn the war into an even more destructive phase. He stressed that instead of taking military steps, both sides should focus on dialogue.
ATACMS is a game for raising the stakes
Ukraine, having received long-range ATACMS missiles from the United States, used them for the first time to strike strategically important targets in Russia. These missiles are capable of delivering precision strikes at a distance of up to 300 km, which significantly enhances the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This decision signalled that the US is ready to support Kyiv with more powerful weapons systems.
The strike, which took place on a symbolic date – the 1,000th day of the full-scale invasion – increased tensions not only between Kyiv and Moscow, but also in the international arena.
Turkey, which has repeatedly acted as a mediator in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, continues to maintain a special position. Erdogan stresses the need to avoid provocations and reduce risks that could lead to uncontrolled escalation. His statement indicates Ankara’s desire to remain an influential player in regional politics and avoid a situation that could jeopardise Turkey’s own interests.
The Turkish president’s statement sounds like a warning that the world is at a crossroads. Will international actors be able to find a way to peace, or will they enter into an even deeper confrontation? In any case, Ukraine’s use of ATACMS has become another turning point in this war, and the reaction of global leaders will indicate the future direction of events.
