US President Donald Trump said he will make a decision on Iran “very soon” amid positive signals from talks between Washington and Tehran, which took place in Oman for the first time in years, Reuters reports.

“We’re going to make a decision on Iran very quickly,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, without going into details.

The new meeting is scheduled for this Saturday in Rome, Axios reports. The previous one, in Oman, was the first official conversation between Iran and the Trump administration in all the years of his presidency, including the 2017-2021 term. Both sides called it “productive” and “calm”.

Nevertheless, Trump once again warned that a military scenario remains realistic if there is no deal. “If we have to use force, we will,” the US president said. He also added that Israel would play a “key role” in a potential conflict.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi confirmed his readiness for a new meeting, noting that the parties are “very close to a common basis for further negotiations”.

According to Trump, time is running out to reach an agreement. The talks are taking place amid Western fears that Iran is seeking nuclear weapons, although Tehran insists that its programme is exclusively peaceful.
