The United States is considering the possibility of establishing a neutral status for the territories around the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant (ZNPP) and is ready to take control of these areas. This was reported on Sunday, 20 April, by the authoritative American publication The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
According to the newspaper’s sources, Washington believes that such an approach could be one of the steps towards ending the war in Ukraine by securing one of the most potentially dangerous facilities in Europe.
The article does not specify which territories around the ZNPP are proposed to be made neutral and how they will be controlled. The question of who exactly should manage the nuclear power plant itself within the framework of the US initiative also remains open.
The WSJ also recalls that in March, Donald Trump had already discussed with Volodymyr Zelenskyy the idea of the US buying Ukrainian power plants, including nuclear facilities, arguing that it was necessary to protect them.
According to the publication, in the future, ZNPP may supply electricity to both the territories controlled by Ukraine and the temporarily occupied areas held by Russia since 2022.
Such proposals by the United States could cause a wide resonance in the international community, as it is not only about security, but also about control over strategic infrastructure.
